School Governors

Our Governors are a mixture of parents, teachers, staff and members of the local community. They work very hard behind the scenes to make sure that the school runs smoothly and that the children in the school have the best possible opportunities made available to them.

Get to know our governors by reading all about them. You may contact any member of the governing body through the school office who will forward any letters. There is also a suggestions box in the school office if you would prefer to use this.

As Governors we now publish our report to parents via a School Profile on the parents centre website set up by the Government. Please follow this link for the most up to date version here.

Iain Vincent

Chair of Governors

I joined the board of governors in September 2008 as a Parent Governor. My appointments include Chair of Resources Committee which is responsible for the financial management of the school, Vice-Chair of the Full Governing Body and in September 2009 was made Chair of Governors.

I have a varied background having worked in the veterinary profession for 11 years, latterly in sales and marketing roles for pharmaceutical distribution companies and senior management of a corporate veterinary practice. However, in 2007 I committed to a full-time, 3-year degree course at the University of Portsmouth studying Marine Environmental Science, providing some real-time experience of education.

Away from university I am a keen diver, surfer, and have recently obtained my powerboat certification, so enjoy getting wet as often as possible. I have a passionate interest in our environment and spend time as a volunteer working on projects for Hampshire Wildlife Trust.

Becoming a governor has been surprisingly interesting, and I would recommend it to any parents who are interested in getting to know the school a little better and giving back some of their time for the good of the school and wider community.

Richard Brown

Vice Chairman

Originally I was asked by the Diocese of Portsmouth in 2002 to join the Board as a Foundation Governor. I was working as a Bank Manager for HSBC at the time (now retired) and I hoped I could offer my service from a business/financial perspective. I also had considerable experience helping establish Christian ethics and moral standards in the workplace.

I am now Vice Chair and Chair of the Resources Committee. I relinquished my role as Chair of Governors in 2009 when I was nearing completion of my training as a Lay Minister (Reader) for the Church of England. I was licensed by the Bishop at the cathedral in the autumn of 2010.

Early on in my time on the Board of Governors of HJS I became caught up with the enthusiasm I saw and it has encouraged me to continue to work with the team to ensure the School is the best possible choice for the children.

I am a “Grandpa” four times over. My two eldest grandchildren are already at the School with number three at the Infant School and a toddler following up the rear. With my commitments to Catherington and Clanfield Churches and my involvement at the School (plus spending time in the Canary Islands) my retirement is very busy!

Kate Utting

Headteacher

I joined the board in September 2002 as Headteacher having held Headteacher posts in Southampton and Winchester.

During my teaching career I have been especially interested in how children learn and the skills they require to help them think at a deeper level.

In my spare time you will find me on the golf course or tennis court.

Deborah Adam

LEA Governor

I joined the board in September 2006 as an LEA Governor

My specific interests within the school are Gifted and Talented pupils I serve on the Pupil Services sub-committee.

Having taught at Horndean Junior School for twelve years, as well as serving on the governing body as the teacher governor for eight years, I decided that I would like to continue to support the school when I left full time employment in August.

I am very interested in pupil literacy and ongoing enjoyment of books.

Jill Baker

Foundation Governor

I joined the board in January 2006 as a Foundation Governor.

My specific interest is RE.
I serve on the Pupil Services sub-committee.

Two of the most important passions in my life are my faith and working with children. I am on the Parochial Church Council at Holy Trinity Blendworth and run the Sunday school at church. Joining the governing body seemed a natural step for me.

This year I have begun an evening class to learn Italian, so Arrivederci!

Bhanumattee (Bhanu) Tewari

LEA Governor

I joined the board in October 2008 as an LEA Governor

I serve on the Pupil Services sub-committee.

I qualified as a teacher in New York where I taught at various schools, in Manhattan and the Boroughs, teaching children up to the age of 12. Although I have not taught since moving to the UK I have a very keen interest in childhood learning and I am interested in how different techniques and approaches work for the differing needs of children.

I joined the board because of my interests mentioned above and I hope to both bring my experiences to the team and also to learn from the team with a view to meeting the objectives of the board of Governors.

I am interested in environmental issues – how individuals and communities can make a difference.

I enjoy hiking, walking and rambling around the UK, gardening, cooking and yoga/pilates. I also have a keen interest in cricket, tennis and snooker.

Christine Sinnett

Staff Governor

I joined the board in 2007 as Staff Governor.

I serve on the Pupil Services committee.

I have been a governor in some of my previous schools as I see education as beyond a class room. I like to be fully involved in school life.

Outside of school I enjoy family life and cross stitching. I aim to make a full recovery after an accident which will enable me to get back to the golf course and table tennis!

Andy Little

Parent Governor

I joined the Board in 2006 as a parent governor.

During my time I have served on the Pupil Services committee and now the Resources committee.

I have two boys who both attend Horndean Junior, one in year four and the other in year six. They both really enjoy going to school and the whole learning environment of Horndean Junior School . I wanted to become a governor to give something back to the community and help support the school so it can provide the best possible education.

The majority of my spare time is family time, whether it’s taking our dog for a walk, swimming or just spending time together.

Matthew Turner

Community Governor

I joined the board of Governors as a Community Governor in November 2011. I have one daughter that started September 2011 at HJS, with another daughter following on in a couple of years.

I have a varied career background working in QA roles in 1st Tier automotive supply and for a medical devices company. For the past 15 years I have worked for a large cosmetics company in QA and manufacturing management roles.

I have a keen interest in the day to day effective running of the school and anything I can do to help the school develop and excel with the education of all its children.

I enjoy spending time with my family and playing golf at any opportunity.

Alison Lee

Child Protection Governor

I joined the Governing Body in 2010 as a Community Governor. I did so in respone to a request for local business leaders in professional business to be involved in local schools.  I grew up in the area and after pursuing my studies in law became a Solicitor and I am now the Head of Family at Biscoes Solicitors. I am enjoying being part of a great school which values all its young people and their education.

I am in my working life a child protection solicitor and I am the child protection Governor and link Governor for Special Educational needs.
